Montgomery Invests In Downtow: $15K Grants for Renovations & Marketing

MONTGOMERY, AL – The City of Montgomery’s Department of Community & Economic Development has launched an exciting initiative to support downtown businesses through the Access Montgomery and Mainstreet Grant Program. This funding opportunity provides a 50% matching grant (up to $15,000) to help business owners enhance their storefronts, modernize their interiors, and improve their overall visibility and appeal.

Why This Grant Matters

Downtown Montgomery has immense potential to become a more vibrant, welcoming, and economically thriving district. However, many storefronts could benefit from updates, whether through refreshed signage, better lighting, interior renovations, or technology upgrades. This grant is designed to help business owners make those improvements while easing the financial burden.

By investing in these enhancements, we can collectively create a more dynamic downtown, one that attracts more visitors, supports local commerce, and fosters community pride.

What the Grant Covers

Eligible businesses within the Main Street Montgomery District can use the funds for:

1. Exterior Improvements

  • Storefront upgrades (façade repairs, fresh paint, awning installation)
  • New signage (including illuminated signs for better nighttime visibility)
  • Outdoor lighting to enhance safety and aesthetics

2. Interior Renovations

  • Flooring, ceiling, and wall updates
  • HVAC, plumbing, and electrical improvements
  • ADA compliance modifications

3. Branding & Marketing

  • Professional logo and graphic design
  • Promotional materials (brochures, banners, window displays)
  • Wayfinding signage to help customers navigate downtown

4. Technology Upgrades

  • Point-of-sale (POS) systems for smoother transactions
  • Security cameras and smart technology for safety and efficiency
  • Digital menu boards or interactive displays

The Power of Lighting & Vibrant Streetscapes

One of the most impactful changes a business can make is improving its exterior lighting and signage. Well-lit storefronts do more than just look attractive, they:

  • Increase foot traffic – Studies show that bright, inviting storefronts draw 20-30% more visitors in the evenings, extending business hours and sales opportunities.
  • Enhance safety – Proper lighting reduces crime and makes pedestrians feel more secure, encouraging longer stays downtown.
  • Boost community morale – Research in urban planning indicates that well-lit, lively streetscapes improve public perception, reduce stress, and create a stronger sense of place.

Cities like Memphis (Beale Street), New Orleans (Bourbon Street), and Nashville (Lower Broadway) have proven that strategic lighting and bold signage transform downtowns into destinations. Montgomery can achieve the same, creating an atmosphere that excites residents and visitors alike.
